Surf's UP! Westport

Post by MarkFromSea » Sat Feb 15, 2014 12:08 pm

Another thread peaked my interest about how the ocean conditions were currently. I popped on over to NOAA and found this for tomorrow:
SUN
SW WIND 15 TO 25 KT...BECOMING S 35 TO 45 KT. COMBINED SEAS
17 TO 20 FT WITH A DOMINANT PERIOD OF 12 SECONDS. SHOWERS IN THE
MORNING...THEN RAIN.

SUN NIGHT
SW WIND 35 TO 40 KT...EASING TO 20 TO 25 KT. COMBINED SEAS
22 TO 23 FT WITH A DOMINANT PERIOD OF 11 SECONDS...SUBSIDING TO 19
TO 20 FT WITH A DOMINANT PERIOD OF 13 SECONDS.

Grab your boards brothers! It's gonna be a good show! LOL

Hmmm... Bottom fishing could get tough. Though if you went out, you would get to see the bottom!

LOL Yep, that was a month ago... 20+ feet is something else... heard there was a rescue out at Westport last night. I looked a couple days ago at weather, looked like as the wind would subside later this weekend, the swell would pick up.... it's all a crap shoot, taking a peek at conditions prior to heading down is the best way to go. The links are above!

magic seaweed is another page people seem to like, more color or something... I prefer black and white from the source, NOAA.

Went out two years or so ago on the Pescatory bottom fishing. 40 ft boat. 6 foot seas when we went out and 14 footers as we came in! It was a chop too. Started feeling a tad green lol

But unlike your standard ruler, it sort of retains it's value even with a fishy aroma. :-"

Swell and wind predictions are looking good for tomorrow. Expecting light on and off showers, but the swells should be 4-6 feet with about 10-13 seconds in between. Winds from 4-8mph.

I took the day off work to head out there. Anyone else going? I'll be fishing the jetty with a buddy.

Hope that works for ya. Glad to hear a boat isn't involved. I'd be worried in a boat.

So those wind speeds are for 10 miles out to sea, correct? Is magic seaweed giving an accurate prediction for the area closer in by the jetty?

Yeah I get that, but I'm saying those wind speeds and swell heights will be greater 10 miles out vs the numbers at the jetty, correct?

Wind is out of the SW. I'm guessing you'll be fine even if the wind picks up per NOAA IF you fish the northern side of the South jetty. I do not know why NOAA and magic seaweed differ. I do not use magic seaweed. Many do.

I've been to WP many times. Sometimes the actual weather is better than predicted, sometimes it is worse. All I'm saying is: I'm glad to hear a boat is not involved.

10 miles out vs right at shore..... weather moves around, she is like a woman, fickle. Just don't catch her on a bad day and you should be fine. ;)

Just checked, wind out of the S... it'll be less wind at the jetty than predicted just slightly off shore, might be a nice day in WP! Make the run since you're shore bound! [thumbsup]

It's actually pretty close on the jetty when you look at the weather reports. All weather has to hit shore. A little bit of wind can kick up monster waves on the jetty. Especially this time of year. Go on the jetty during a small craft advisory and tell me it isn't as reported 10 miles out. I check the swell and weather before I go out every time. Pretty accurate.
