Fishing grammar

Post by The Quadfather » Wed Dec 10, 2014 9:35 pm

OK, Im going to expose myself here for a moment.
Expose my "Ignancy"
So it has always really bugged me when I see people use the word, "Fishes" when they are saying something like, "It was a great time. We caught a whole bunch of (fishes). We saw lots of(fishes) everywhere."

Tonight I read a statement from an employee of the Alaska dept. of game and wildlife. She made this sort of statement.

So, I did some research. (Although i dont think she meant multiple species, lol.
You can say, "Fishes" but this must refer to multiple species!
OK, this is what happens when the forum becomes slow during the dead of winter.
Just a comment. [flapper]

I hear you Quad. I feel the same way. I read an article recently about Steelhead fishing where the author kept referring to them as "Steelheads". Not sure if it's incorrect or not, but sure sounds funny to me and just seems wrong. [flapper]

I have used the word fishes in my posts in the past. For instance I may have said something like "The fishes cooperated well for me". When I did that I was doing it jokingly. LOL. On the other hand, I believe it is correct grammar when my wife tells her friends something like "My husband "fishes" way too much" [laugh]
It is also common to hear folks from the UK or elsewhere in Europe refering to more than one Northern Pike as "Pikes"
like in "We went out and caught some pikes today"

I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

Yup, when I'm joking around, like in my fishing reports, I'll say 'fishie' and 'fishies'. Such as "The little fishie was fun". Or caught lots of little 'fishies' today, or only 1 little fishie.

And yes "Fishes too much IS the correct use, but just isn't true, just how CAN a person fish TOO much?

I also like to say meese and meeses for mice and moose multiples of such. [laugh] And yes my white rat I had as a pet was named 'Moosie'. [thumbsup]

Fishers, fisherpeople, or fisherpersons. There's already a gender neutral term - angler. [wink]

Oh wait, that would mean I need to change my username to hewesangler. [laugh]

I agree with AMX especially on #1 & #2 and my thoughts on #3 are; If 2 mouses are mice, are 2 grouses grice?

fisher is is a noun that means "one who fishes". Fishes or fish are both acceptable in the plural, and it is probably along the same line as "squid" and "Squids", like you say when referring to more than one species. The word "moose" came to us from Algonquian Indians. Consequently its plural, instead of being "mooses" or "meese", is the same as the singular. That is true of most Indian names whether of a tribe, such as the Winnebago and Potawatomi, or of an object such as papoose. It is also true of many wildlife names not of Indian origin -- for example: deer, mink and grouse.

The ones that bother me the most are grammar errors in general. Lack of puncuation or cpitalisation misspellations and the incorrect usage of homofnes and acronims such as lol ttl or enyting that would apeeer in a txt massage of a 14 yo grl.

I just went to Dictionary.com and found my assumption to be correct. Misspellations is officially not a real word.
You guys really need to get out and fish more. Even if youe wifes say you fishes tue much.
I think I might start another thread about spelling like it would sound if you were from another country. Believe me, I have seen that on the website a time or two.

Aj's Dad I think you missed the point. I am quite aware that misspellations is indeed not a word.

Actually at first I thought you knew it wasn't a word. Then I put it into google and it popped up several times, so I thought maybe it was a word that I didn't know. I forgot to put in the LOL. I wasn't throwing any stones, just having a little fun. No insult intended. :)
