Listen to your iPod or Zune while fishing?
Does anyone plug in their iPod and play some Wyclef, Akon and Niia, or am I the only one?! lol... I always listen to my iPod when I fish cutts by myself...rather it be alternative, rap or trance, the iPod is an integral part of my success and habit...just wondering if any of you fishermen/women listen to your iPods or music players. Now I'm out to listen to this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=RhxsEDyOtzQ ---- http://youtube.com/watch?v=HQ6fn2xEOzs

I don't listen to my iPod on the water, although I have thought about it. While at work I listen to it all week long. I have it plugged into a iHome which puts out some fairly good sound. When the weekend comes around, I am ready for a break from the music and want to listen to the sounds of nature on the water.
I watched the video of Wyclef, Akon and Niia . Very good!! Niia not only is an extremely attractive woman, she is very talented on the keyboard and has an exceptional voice. I like their sound. Thanks for the tip. If they are on iTunes I'll down load some of the music.

Nope. I can pay attention and not get bored just by watching the rod while trolling...

i agree with sam, by the time i am on the water i am never thinking of anything besides the fish i want to catch. but the ipod helps a lot while i am in the gym.

Awesome Marc! I'm glad you enjoyed that -- I love Niia, she has such an amazing voice. You can dowload the entire song on iTunes, if you search "Sweetest Girl" under Song Title, and "Wyclef" under artist...then simply go ahead and download the song with the most popularity or the version (there are several) that you like. She is very, very talented on the keyboard and it makes for great listening! I took a Jazz History class at Gonzaga a couple years ago and got into Miles Davis, Count Bassie, etc. and have been listening to them as well...I think a broad appreciation for all varieties of music is special. Glad you enjoyed it -- to the others -- I can see where you're coming from -- tranquility on the water is something that is so special. Thanks for the input.Marc Martyn wrote: I watched the video of Wyclef, Akon and Niia . Very good!! Niia has only one way to go in her musical career...... up. With her talent on the keyboard and angelic voice, she could easily crossover into other genres. It would be interesting to see what she could do with blues. I would like to here her sing a version of The Forecast, recorded by Bettye Lavette.
Studying classical music opens the doors to many areas of music. Niia's voice reminds me of Eva Cassidy. Eva played many of the jazz night clubs in NY before settling into folk/pop. Unfortunately, Eva died of cancer in her early 30's.
While doing a little research into Niia, I discovered these videos also. Nancy Sinatra, sit up and listen:

These are great clips about Niia. She has that "sustainable voice" to cross over to many genres of music and, as you said, is only going up. Don't you just love the music!? "Bang Bang" at Platinum is awesome. There really isn't a better vocalist right now on the scene. She would be amazing in classical and blues...I also love this song: http://youtube.com/watch?v=wGZKcSU7qHU -- but remember it's trance...her voice is so pure...by Stellar Project. It's on my Zune! When I fish Alice tomorrow, there is nothing like hooking into a nice 12" bow with this playing...I think music and fishing really are great together.

My Ipod gets it's workout at home or in the car (and ranges all over the board KMFDM, Billie Holiday, Bethoven, Violent Femmes, Hank Williams, Mad Season, Muddy Waters, Tito Puente, and on and on..). I enjoy the sounds around me too much when I am out and about, whether fishing, hiking or whatever.
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

I perfer the sounds of nature. Nothing ruins the serenity of a fishing trip like a ski boat with a stereo blasting. (Sound travels very well over water.)

ditto here, I use my Zune or Sansa for the drive but once I start fishing I like to hear nature around me. I've tried listenign to music but for me it's distracting.
RE:Listen to your iPod or Zune while fishing?

I have tried it, but like Hillbilly, Mike, tnj and others, it is too distracting for me and it takes away from the outdoors which I so much enjoy.

I listen to my iPod pretty much everywhere but on the water.
Except on Lake Sammamish, because I know I won't catch a fish.

I've got an I-phone and listen to tunes on the way to and on the way back from fishing. When I'm fishing I want to hear the sounds of natural nature as it happens.

Holy crap... someone else listens to KMFDM!
As far as listening on the water is concerned, I've thought about it but never done it. I've seen a cooler with little speakers and a mp3 jack in it I almost bought for fishing. I could easily see myself having a better day on the water w/ some CCR, Dr. John, or Floyd in the background- especially when going from spot to spot on the water... I think headphones would just get in the way of my casting so tiny speakers is the only way I'd do it.

On small lakes and ponds I don't see a problem with it as long as it can't be heard more than a few feet away from my boat; on large lakes I wouldn't do it since some (not all, but enough) of the wakeboard/powerboat guys are just plain idiots and don't watch where they are going. I want to know when I need to get the heck out of Dodge before I get hit or capsized by their wake.

RE:Listen to your iPod or Zune while fishing?
For those who listed to their iPods while fishing, I am thankful because the music is in their ear and not mine which is a courtesy I appreciate. When I am on the water fishing, I’m there for a couple of different reasons. First and foremost to enjoy the peace and quiet. I love to listen to the loons and other birds on the lake while I am fishing. The splash of a fighting fish-on in the quiet of a lake makes being on the water a great experience for me. I love the quiet conversation that comes with fishing with a buddy or my wife who is with me on most fishing trips. The last thing I want to experience when fishing are loud people, whining kids, barking dogs, or loud music. As a small child my dad taught me to keep my voice down when we were fishing or at our camp site. I really didn’t understand that concept then but definitely understand it now and practice it at all times when fishing or camping. I absolutely do not enjoy being in a campground listening to loud people or yelling kids. I’m there to get away from it all, not to hear someone who hasn’t a clue about courtesy to others. The guy who has his music up loud enough for me to hear two camp sites away? I think to myself, does this clown really think I want to hear his music? But I usually keep my mouth shut to avoid the confrontation even though I want to shove the music player, well you know where. I’m on the water or on a camping trip to get away from all that. Now, if I am on a lake that people live around, or one where other water sports take place, I am less irritated with the noise I described above because I recognize that it comes with the territory. Or when I fish Cranberry Lake at Deception Pass and a military jet flies overhead, it’s expected so I don’t sweat it. So for me I love the quiet that comes with fishing and although I love to listen to music, I leave it behind. Good luck and good fishin.

RE:Listen to your iPod or Zune while fishing?
A couple of years ago, I wrote a Featured Lake article on Amber Lake, Spokane Co. At the end of the article, I pretty much expressed my feelings about being around nature on the lakes:
"Fall fishing on Amber, especially in the evening, can only be expressed as memorable. As the sun sets on the horizon, the evening serenade begins. It usually starts with the quiet song of the mourning dove and then joined in by the soft, haunting, toad like trill of the Nighthawk. Off on one of the distant rock mounds a pack of coyotes begin to howl. The finale of all this is the call of the Great Horned Owl and an occasional lone train whistle miles off in the distance. If you haven't experienced an evening on Amber, you should. You won't forget it."

I tried it today without the iPod. The electric trolling motor cracking through the ice...yeah not so nature-ish. In fact, lawn mowers and weed wackers were the sounds on Beaver today...I bet Amber is amazing in the late evenings on summer days. It's expected to hear mowers on a Sunday before the Superbowl
