excuses for getting skunked

Post by beerman1981 » Wed Apr 30, 2008 4:55 pm

If any of you are like me, it kind of hurts the pride when I get skunked. I don't do it intentionally, but I always have a list of excuses for when somebody says "You fished all day, why didn't you catch anything?" My replies are usually similar to the following:

"Well there was a cold front coming in and I'm sure that is what killed the bite."

"I was helping my buddy try to catch a fish and wasn't able to attend to my pole as often as needed."

"I had a lot of hits, but it turned out my hook was dull, so I couldn't hook them"

Do you guys have any favorite excuses for getting skunked?

Everyone has bad days. That's just fishing.

At least that's what I say to myself.

I usually don't say anything. If I'm asked I how I did, I'll say "nothin' ". If someone then says, What happened? I say jokingly "nothing".

I try as hard as possible to not have this happen, but it does. I'll use Kzoo's excuse too sometimes "that's just fishing".

Hopefully this year we won't have to come up with any excuses. [-o<

Up until today, the last fish I caught was in October. Plenty of time to come up with excuses, but most of the time...a "Hell if I know!" was sufficient. Below would be a typical conversation...

Month One:
someone: you go fishing?
me: yep
someone: how'd you do?
me: nothing
someone: too bad, what happened
me: don't know...weren't bitin'

Month Two:
someone: you go fishing?
me: yep
someone: how'd you do?
me: not a bite
someone: too bad, what happened
me: don't know...must be the weather

Month Three:
someone: you go fishing?
me: yep
someone: how'd you do?
me: not a flippin' one!
someone: too bad, what happened
me: leave me alone...!

Month Four:
someone: you go fishing?
me: yep
someone: how'd you do?
me: STUPID FISH!!!!!
someone: sorry....

Month Five:
someone: you go fishing?
me: yep
someone: how'd you do?
me: does it really matter!!??
someone: too bad, what happened
me: you got a lighter so I can burn this crap gear!!???

Month Six:
someone: you go fishing?
me: yep
someone: how'd you do?
me: got my limit
someone: cool...
me: how have you been doing?
someone: nothing...
me: HAHA!! you suck!!

This is what I say.I would of caught one if I stayed out longer, but my girlfriend wouldn't let me stay longer.
But this is the actual truth is it was it's already been dark for teo hours and the park at the I fish closes at dark.
Some times the fish just win.Very clever for such a small brained animal.

Haha thats exactly what I say! I don't get skunked very often, but when I don't get a bite within 2 hours I simply give up and just enjoy the scenic surrounding from there on out. So in a way it's a truthful excuse.

Always blame it on the weather, but I barely ever go skunked. And when I do, it's usually because of the weather, so it's all good

I rarely get skunked because I'm too stubborn to give up. (According to my wife, that's NOT a good thing.) When the fishing sucks, a 3-hour fishing trip can easily turn into a full day of frustration. Gotta catch at least one! ](*,)

But if I catch one, that means my luck might be changing! Maybe I should stay longer to find out for sure. This is the same mentality that prevents me from leaving a casino until I'm totally broke... [-(

Hillbilly- My wife just asked me if I post under two different accounts. I have the exact same story.

When I meet others out on the water or during a quick trip to the john I usually wave off my bad luck as experimentation time or getting used to new equipment. Not exactly lying, but...:-"

Any day on the water is good, so long as you don't lose any gear. It the explaining you have to do when you get home many hours later than planned. The theme song from Gilligan's Island should be playing whenever I fish. Come to think of it- it might be a very good thing the local lakes close at dark. I'd never come home skunked!

I like Sam's answer the best. In my last three reports I state that it is my guess that the bite is be slow because the water temp is too cold. Although I believe that’s true, if it's not, it's a good excuse. Thankfully so far this year I haven't been skunked. I think Marc Martin's quote is right on as well.

All those excuses sound very familiar lol. I have gotten my fair share of skunks, but its all my fault. I just cant stay put. As soon as I catch a fish at one lake or on 1 lure, I have to switch something. There is no way I could fish the same lake using the same method day in and day out, thats no fun. Uh oh I am making excuses w/o even knowing it lol.

All excuses aside, dont let this year get to you. The weather has been taking its toll on all the lakes. But we will get that weather sooner or later.
