Best place to launch a car topper at green lake?

Post by gian » Sun Mar 22, 2009 8:51 pm

I have a 12' inflatable with trolling motor, battery, gear, etc and I would like to give green lake a try in the next few weeks. I see in the satelite photo that there are multiple parking lots, docks, and roads by the lake. So I thought I would ask all of you in your experiance what would be the easiest location for me to try and launch from. Are there any special directions I should know? I usually try to park as close to the water as possible, blow up the boat by the car, get the boat down to the water and ready, then go park the car and start my fishing trip. Are there places like that, or do I have to carry my boat from the parking lot?

thanks in advance for any input.

Gian,

Most people would probably point you to launching at the aqua-theater at the south end of the lake. There is a small amount of parking that is located only about 50' from the water. A couple of things though.... the parking is very limited and usually full in this small lot. Yes, there is parking right across the street, but it is further. Also this is where all the crew rowers go out from, and can be busy with their mess.

What I think is the best place is on the North end of the lake. If you go almost straight across from the island (just a bit East of it actually) there is a large parking lot only a couple hundred feet from the water. This is a quieter part of the lake. There is also one of the few beaches on the lake (open water access) Look for the dock it is near there.
One other thing to know is that there is actually no motors at all.... that includes electric trolling motors allowed on the lake. This is set by the city of seattle parks dept. They only allow the crew dept. to have a gas motor on the lead boat. Now on this note,,, I know that Urbanangler on this site hasn't seemed to have any problem with his electric. Frankly, I don't see anybody enforcing anything like this out there, and the Minn Kota is pretty stealth.
I'd go for it... but just so you know. Good luck. post a report. Watch out for those crew guys, they can be very rude with their physical space on the water.

I only ran my electric motor on there one time, my maiden voyage in the portabote, before I was aware of the no motors rule. It was my WL.com fishing report that got the subject discussed. I called the city and verified the no motors rule. Apparently there is some signage stating the no motor restrictions on the north end of the lake. I launched from the south end just clockwise from the boat docks, right where quad describes, since I could park close.

I am not sure if I will try running the minnkota on green lake again. Might just row on it someday, and have the electric motor mounted in case of an extreme emergency :)
==urban== please don't tell me to C&R or to fish your way, thank you

thanks for the responses. If theres going to be a no motor rule enforced, I may bring the small 2 man boat and get my row on. I have no problems with that. Plus I can carry that boat easier, it's the one I take on my hikes. I will go for the spot you mentioned away from the crowds. I prefer the less stressful way when I'm looking for a relaxing day on the lake.

thanks agian guys
