Bizarre Foods
Bizarre Foods
I was watching one of my favorite shows, Bizarre Foods today. The show was in Alaska this time and he ate Salmon wings. The said it was made from the collar of the fish. What exactly is that. Also, the show made me think of a good question. What is the most bizarre food you have ever eaten. For me it would have to be alligator. I had it in a cajun restaurant in D.C. I have to say that gator is very good. It was very tender and sweet. Oh, and cow tongue. I love cow tongue but I haven't had it in years.

RE:Bizarre Foods
The collar is the hard plate behind the gills that the pectoral fin connects to. Most of the fancy smokers or filleter's trim it off. It has some of the most flavorful if not oily meat on the fish. On a big fish you can't beat the cheeks and collar.

RE:Bizarre Foods
In Russia I tried "Meat Jelly" you know when you put a leftover roast or ham in the fridge, then take it out the next day and the juice gells - that is what it reminded me of - except they make it, cut it in little cubes and serve it with a meal. I also tried Caviar while there - ugh, like eating a cracker topped with jelled salt. Our family has a cattle ranch in Nebraska - so of course Rocky Mountain Oysters - taste like liver. Hmm what else.. Alligator nuggets (tough, but tasty), rattlesnake burger (very good). Though between Russia and Mexico, I am sure the most bizzare thing I've eaten was something I never knew I had (or want to know)...
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker
RE:Bizarre Foods
They did the same thing in Alaska. It was Moose Nose Jelly. it looked nasty. I've always wanted to try rattlesnake.

I think the most bizarre tasting food I have eaten is uni (sea urchin). I like it a lot, but its flavor is very uni-que (haha, pun intended). There's really nothing you can say that it tastes like, except well, it tastes like uni. :compress:

RE:Bizarre Foods
i,ve eaten many strange things the worst tasting was a vegemite sandwich when i was on liberty in perth, australia , nightcrawlers do taste much better!! had dog and monkey cobbobs in the philippines. and some funky stuff from a crock in korea. ate a cricket on a bet. ate lots of snapping turtle. had rattle snake, frog legs. a half eaten apple worm ( saw the other half in the apple after i swallowed it) grandma's goolash was another. at the end of the month the fridge was cleaned out of all the stuff that nobody figured was good to eat but we had this goolash and there was no store run. also there was a few live goldfish. also won $75.00 from about 10 sailors who bet that i would not drink my pop can full of chew spit. <')//<
RE:Bizarre Foods
Panfisher, I just threw up in my mouth
RE:Bizarre Foods
Had a Yak burger in Chehalis over the weekend, have had rattlesnake, cougar and black bear backstraps, and on a bet tried some cured salmon eggs while out steelhead fishing with some buddies (yea there was LOTS of beer involved). Not good...borax and salt! Bad going down and worse coming back up!

I think I'm gonna get sick, chew spit aggggggg. I rememmber years ago when partying you have to watch out on the beer cans around. I took a swig on one and there was a cigarette butt in it and just about lost it. My oddest stuff would be cougar, bear, squid, and octopus beside a soggy cigarette butt. :pale:
RE:Bizarre Foods
These storeys remind me of when I was working in my yard last fall. It was cold out and while working I just grab the coldest fullest beer sitting on the table. Now there were a bunch of empties on the table, my first grab, a cold 1/2 full beer. Now I remember thinking, I know I didnt already drink this much. But any way it was cold. But turns out being it was cold out, all the 1/2 beers were in fact cold. Yeah go figure, Bottoms up, followed by throw up. See I like to keep my front yard nice enough for the neighbors, but the back yard looks like a junk yard. Fishing, crabbing boating stuff laying everywhere. Not to mention tools and my BBQ. And I m a pack rat. Also my 2 fridges, one for beer one for crab bait, and the door is connected to my fishing room. So it can go weeks w/o me picking anything up, Yeah I know pretty bad. But anyway I figure this beer was at least 3 weeks old. Upon further examination I poured the rest of the contents of the beer can out. 2 flies and a cigarette but. Sorry got a little off topic, but that was grossBasshunter046 wrote: I think I'm gonna get sick, chew spit aggggggg. I rememmber years ago when partying you have to watch out on the beer cans around. RE:Bizarre Foods
the can full of chew spit was pretty funny. imagine about 15 sailors all standing around waiting for me to drink this full can of chew spit. about three ran to the head (bathroom) to spew right off when i took the first swig. about 5 more fought over the garbage cans to also spew which in turn made a few more run to the head because of the spew sounds and smell, when i was half done and wiped the dark spit running down my chin, of course this was when the rest that were still standing thought i was going to loose it and loose the bet, but with a grimmice i held on to finish the can off with making a point to let the last goober spit hang a bit before i let it fall into my mouth, thats when the rest ran off looking for the garbage cans, and to pray to the toilet gods to never let them witness such stuff ever again. i then let out a belch grabbed my winnings and went to stand my watch feeling great that i made easy money. LOL <')//<
RE:Bizarre Foods
one other thing alot of people think is gross but i find is great eating is row from panfish such as perch, crappie, sunfish. just keep the row in its sack and cook it any way you want, i like mine fried in butter. thinking of deep fried stuffed jalapeno's with this would be great! can't wait till next year!!!! <')//<

RE:Bizarre Foods
I saw one of my brothers accidentaly take a sip from his spit cup, but to drink the whole thing. YUK! Panfisher you are one sick MF. And for only 75 bucks. It better had been 75 frog skins from each of the 10 or 15 sailors. That is some straight up fear factor $h!t. I don't know if I could do it for a million. How drunk were you?

RE:Bizarre Foods
it had my own spit in it. this was back in 1984, we had been on the water over a month with no liberty ports (bordom) and all my money was sent home except. $40.00 a pay check, so i did things like that to have some liberty money. $75.00 was a heck of a lot of money to me back then. <')//<

RE:Bizarre Foods
I'll eat anything once. I am sitting here trying to think what the most bizarre would be.
dogfood and dog snacks
almost everything sushi, eel, raw fish eggs, blowfish, squid, etc.
snake, alligator, shark, everything on a cow (family lived on a farm)
More will come to me, but bizarre, I don't know.
Cool thread! I have buddies just like you panfisher. :cyclops:
