Different types of salmon mating.

Post by Fish_Bait111397 » Mon Jul 11, 2011 9:17 pm

Alright so I was just wondering,
ive heard of the infamous "chumpy" . A mix between a chum, and a pinky.
Is this true?
If so, do other type of salmon mate as well?
say for instance;
a silver and a king?
a sockeye and a pink?
king and a chum?
silver and a chum?

I don't think that the fish will intentionally mate with another species of salmon, yet I can see the possibility of cross "pollination" happening due to tight spawning conditions. The million dollar question is, are they genetically compatible for a cross to take? My guess would be yes, there are too many pics of weird looking fish not to believe that it happens.

Well,, when you try to post a response 4x, and you just can't keep it raged G,, then I guess I just have to shut the computer off. "Mating Salmon" #-o #-o That sounds like a new term that Bill Clinton might have coined during the Lewinsky scandal, sort of redifning the whole circle of life act.

I get out an fish as much as I can.
Im comin from a family that only 2 people like to fish, me an my uncle. My uncle lives in Washington.
So the only way for me to get out and fish is if i walk to the lake and the closest lake is 4 miles.
Walkin 4 miles to a lake in 110+ degree weather is a great idea , isnt it? :eye:
Or i can pay for gas.
Im a 13 year old with no job obviously! So thats another hard option.
Ive broken 1 state record here in AZ, and was 2 oz off of breakin another one today.
Yeah i got way to much time on my hands.

Hey if we're gonna go crazy, i'd like to see a chum cross bred with a mako shark8-[ . At least that'll give some reason for 80lb braid in the chum season:rambo: !
Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga, except i still get to kill something.

OK fishbait sorry for hijacking your thread LOL.

Getting back to salmon though, I think I remember someone put up an odd-looking female chum in fish ID thread or somewhere like that as I recall that almost looked like a pink? Not sure where that thread was.

Kind of along the same lines - pulled this from an article I read..

Steelheads are genetically the same as rainbow trout. Indeed, the offspring of both steelhead and rainbow trout are all referred to as rainbow trout, because at that stage the tiny fish are identical. The steelhead gains its name change only after it makes its journey to the sea. After the return of the steelhead to its freshwater birthplace to breed, the fish can mate with either another steelhead or a rainbow trout. When the eggs of these fish hatch, the tiny fish that emerge are identical and thus are all considered at that stage to be rainbow trout.
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

This thread went nowhere fast.

In short, yes it can happen. Steelhead and salmon both.

CAN happen but DOESN'T happen often.

LOLOL nate. Maybe spokey and pooh will get their wish on the chum shark. Hope they will allow for them to be manhandled like a big hali, i.e. no handling at all, just plussing them with a slug 'til they stop wiggling. Yeesh the teeth.
