Toons?

Post by Roby » Thu Apr 05, 2012 7:19 pm

Just thought I would make a thread seeing how many of you use pontoon boats. I got mine last year and used it a handful of times but this year it is my only rig so will be getting used full time. If any of you have tips and mods you'd be willing to share post them up.

Thanks,

Roby

I'm spoiled, I have two. A two person Dave Scadden I use for rivers and a smaller no name I use on little lakes. The small guy I just throw in the back of my truck, the bigger one rides on top. I bet I get a lot of curious stares going down the highway. [scared]

I had a nice 10' odc, all my buddies were bonna buy them and nobody ever did so I sold it and got small tin boat for the kid to go with me. Kinda miss the toon, it was fun but Im not much for fishing alone. Would be a blast with a few guys going down a river or a lake.

I put a small minn kota on mine.
I also added a 7" riser to the seat to let me sit higher.... dont do this you can row with your knees hittin the oars ](*,)

Check out the video section, Mike posts some amazing videos and I just watched one that was really cool. I thing it was the Wynoochie River.

Use caution on moving water, Gotta have a good toon, good gear and knowledge. Alot of fun to be had on the rivers when your ready. Worth a guided trip to learn the river.

That's a great vid.. actually saw it right before you commented on this. I'm still not ready to go on moving water, even though it does look like a ton of fun if done right.

yes, indeed, ask Nate, pontoons on moving water can drift deceptively fast and snags can come up on you before you know it. I think Nate had to do laundry after our last Cowlitz float, LOL.

I've had a little 5' kickboat style toon for years. That thing has seen a ton of fish. I like it better than the kickboats because you are a little higher in the water. Made a back deck by taking 1/2" pvc and making a square, covering it with pipe insulation, then stretching some fabric screen over it and zip-tyeing it to the top of the toon. Worked really well. Also made a couple rod holders out of PVC pipe.

I also have my 10' BadCat cataraft (black & white one in the Wynoochie video). It is awesome  Still figuring out cool mods for it. Started out with my un-patented PVC rod holders & GoPro camera mount. The last trip on the Cowlitz I got to test out my oar holders, worked pretty sweet.

Basically with PVC pipe, zip ties, and velcro your options are limitless.
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker
