Product Test - Nate's Bait Herring Cure

Post by Mike Carey » Tue Sep 25, 2012 8:32 pm

So I just posted a report today on fishing for coho off Edmonds. Last night I gave Nate's Bait Herring Cure a try for my herring strips. The product is advertised to cure your herring (using a sulfite base) and add "bite enhancers and stimulants to drastically increase response and lure fish to your boat".

That's a strong statement. So how did it do for me?

The product comes in a shake bottle and is designed to be pretty easy to use. The instructions call for a 24 hr cure. Unfortunately I was fishing the next morning, 12 hours away, so like most American males I immediately didn't follow the directions, LOL. Rather than soak my herring strips in a mixture of the cure and water, I elected to use the product as a shake cure, in a plastic bag, and let my bait cure in the shake overnight. I also added some rock salt as I wanted to get the store bought frozen herring toughened up. So I guess you could say this is a partial product review...

The product comes in five colors, Bright Red, Brilliant Blue, Green, Hot Pink, and Natural. I had Green. Not my first choice, but (fair disclaimer here) it was free so I'm not complaining. The dying process definately turned the herring a shade of green which did stay that way in use. Not that it matter, I was changing bait long before the dye would wear off (more on that in a bit).

The rock salt plus sulfite gave me a nice, tough herring strip, without overly drying the strip out. On the water the strip stayed on my hook nicely and did not get mushy on me.

So how did the company's statement play out? Well, we had a solid slack tide bite which had me jumping for rods for an hour, more than I ever have with just my rock-salt and anise scented herring strips. My wife and I in the course of an hour and a quarter had four solid hook-ups and another eight or so bites of varying intensity, all requiring re-baiting. I can honestly say I have never had that degree of action fishing for coho in the Sound. We did have a terrible hook up ratio, but I think that was an issue of bad hooks (which I will correct!). The proof for me was finding the need to start cutting my strips in half so I wouldn't run out. After the slack tide bite things did slow down for us - just a few bites the next two hours. I believe that the product did help increase the tendency of the feeding fish to strike, compared to previous bites I have experienced. I will definately use this product again to see if I have similar results.

correct, so I can't say it was a scientific method at all. I can only comment based on previous fishing trips experience.
