for these chums would a low pro caster like for silvers be enough? or would you step up to a much bigger setup?

You should be fine, it may take a bit to bring them it but then that's the fun.

I've caught plenty with my Curado 201E. Just have to be patient and enjoy the runs...

No fish should be "just kicked back into the water".

Well arent you just the little elitist eh? Not all fishing is for meat. When november comes and my 4 freezers are full of king and silver why wouldnt you go wrestle some 20 lb pigs that fight like hell!?

I do not kick my fish back in not matter what they look like I am just saying i thought people just go from coho to steelhead, I fish for chums for fun and if I get a nice female i will keep it then give the meat to my family or nieghbors. Chums are really the only game we got in bremerton haha, just they are so easy to catch it is like pink fishing. but still fun nonetheless.

We're catching plenty of chum in the Sky right now, even getting a few dime bright chromers for the table! I'm sure that the Skagit will be just as good, we've got the water for 'em to shoot straight up and in!

Oh they fill out the river. They're wild fish so they'll return to a lot of those creeks to spawn, so they get pretty well spread out. I really enjoy chum season. Nothing like the smell of wet fall leaves on the groung, fog on the water and FISH ON after FISH ON all day! A thermos full of hot chocolate and sardines and crackers and a flask full of bourbon to keep you warm. PUt some of that Maker's in your hot chocolate and it's game ON!

It's not the size of the reel so much as the gear ratio. If you are using a low pro baitcaster a gear ratio like the Revo Winch has which is 5.4:1 (5.4 spool turns per handle rotation) will fight bigger fish more effectively than a faster retrieve ratio like a 6.3:1 or 7:1.

Not sure how you figure it. Never had an issue with my 7:1, you are fighting the fish with the rod and drag. In fact I would say with a big fish if it starts running right at you that 7:1 ratio is going to be preferred to be able to keep up.
