and depending on the direction of the swell and wind, I agree.... no protection if wind is out of any of the wests.... some protection if out of N or S... and even better protection from any of the easts. my 2 cents

LOL when the bar is closed.... so should the jetty..... LOL
but it's listed as moderate today, should be ok....

ResQ's right on. There are sites for the whole coast and strait, and you can usually get a pretty accurate picture from them in the short term. Checking often helps, it can change quickly.

Oh, and just in case, mizm05, I was making fun of politicians, NOT you earlier!!! Good fishing to you!

We went, we saw, we fished all day and came home with 3 fish. I got a sea bass and a smallish cabezon. My buddy got a kelp greenling. I hit both of my fish on Gulp 6 inch grubs, new penny color, and 1 oz jig heads. No lings for us, and we talked to everyone we saw, no lings for anyone else either. Park ranger said it's been slow so far. Weather was fine, showers off and on, but wind and waves were pretty tame.

I did learn that I need heavier jig heads. Had 3/4 and 1 oz and both were getting dragged all over the place by the current.

All in all, I would say save your gas money until things pick up.

Sounds like you had a little current :) when that happens you have to just drop down to the bottom with heavy weight. Best to hit it at slack tide. I fish with 3/4 ounce 99% of the time on my jigs out there.

Slack tide is when the current went nuts...well just after slack tide. It was like someone hit a light switch. Within a 2 minute period, water started rushing back out to sea and we couldn't keep our jigs on the bottom. My buddy plunked with night crawlers for a bit and got 3 solid hits, 1 of which he landed. Ended up being a kelp greenling. I didn't have plunking gear so I just jig fished.

I'd like to head back out there when we have a bit more consistent warm weather. Maybe sometime in April. Maybe I'll put my feelers out there and see if we can get a few members together to do a group event. It was a learning experience...next time I know to tweak a couple things and hopefully do a bit better. My only consolation is that the experienced guys we talked to didn't really do any better than we did.
