Florocarbon Leader

Post by strider43 » Mon Jan 12, 2015 6:24 pm

I seem to be having a problem with my florocarbon leader breaking where I tie it to my swivel. I have been tying knots for some time and have caught big fish without this problem now the smallest hookset or tug when Im snaged is breaking off at the swivel. I am using Vanish by berkly and my current line is two years old. Is it too old?

I also have a new batch of swivels, has anyone ever got bad swivels that have burrs that break line?

baserkly: NEVER USE!!!!!!!!!

I use P-Line CX for my spinning reels, 6 lb for drop shot, and 10 lb for senko, etc.

I use a clinch knot, lasts for days using a VMC swivel hook. If I use just a standard dropshot hook, size 2 or 4, I use a Palomar knot, but the clinch knot with the swivel hook lasts much longer. Be sure to test the knots often, like every 1/2 hour, or after landing a med to big fish, or if it drags thru vegetation, rocks, or alongside a dock, anything that might scratch the line or nick the knot.

2 year old line at 6lb test seems a bit old. Yes I've used 2 and 5 year old line before and no problems, for awhile, then knot problems. Put on new line and all is well for another year or 2 or so. These days I usually put on new line every few months. Put on new stuff, use a clinch knot and see what happens.

Oh, and I never have used a swivel on the dropshot, maybe someday I'll try it, but same-same with the knots.

You might also learn how to tie the Fish-n-fool knot, it's a good one, some day I'll have to spend more time learning it.

The line im currenly having a problem with is 10 LB under my in-line sinker float fishing the river. I pre tie jigs, hooks for beads and larger hooks for bait. I roll onto pipe insulation and carry in my pack wrapped in a plastic bag. I have done this for years with salmon/steelhead gear and for trout flys with 6 lb test. Some of these that are breaking are fresh on the line, just put on my rod for fishing and the break is alway in the same place.

Maybe the knot is just getting caught on a sharp rock. Not too many knots and lines can stand up to sharp rock edges.

I had issues with Berkley vanish when I tried it. That was 5 or more years ago though and I haven't used it so since. I'm a Seguar guy. Make sure you wet your knots good and cynch them slowly. I also keep my leader in my bait fridge when I'm not on the water. The cold, dark environment helps to make it last longer.
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

I use 6lb P-line CX as fluoro leader on my trout rigs. No problems and I don't retie but maybe once every other few trips, sometimes I'll go all winter without retying. My terminal gear is P-line or Spro barrel swivels with crosslock snaps. Only failures have been hangups on bottom/structure and expecting 6lb leader to withstand 3000lbs of boat in wind or current.
