Anybody Geocache??

Post by The Quadfather » Wed May 14, 2008 9:17 pm

I was just curious if anybody on this site is into Geocaching? Into what?? check out http://www.geocaching.com/Default.aspx

This kind of a cool thing I've discovered that is basicly treasure hunting with a hand held GPS. It has hugely caught on all over the world. Via the above website you can click almost any country in the world or just go to your zip code and find the Waypoints (coordinates) for where people have left all kinds of things. Check out Zimbabweah (sp?) or the middle of Iraq.
It may sound kind of goofy, but people track their items as they are replaced all over the world. You might say, " eh,, there isn't anything near me.. but then check out your zip code, and you will see that you are walking by stuff every day.

Anyway, it's HUGELY addicting.

Hmm....drive out towards Kapowsin, toss out a recliner and an old fridge...call it geocahing. Sounds like an interesting way to get rid of some extra junk lying about the house... :clown:

I'm just kidding...looks like a bit of fun.

My wife found while we were biking on the John Wayne Trail on Snoqualmie pass a couple years ago. Not looking, just checking out a little waterfall and found it behind a rock. I've also talked to people running around a park near my house looking for one. I have too many hobbies as it is, but it sounds like a great way to spend time with kids!
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

Our family did "Letter Boxing" for awhile and it was a lot of fun. Just got to be too much time and so many boxes lost.

Letter Boxing is like geocahing except they use hints and clues to find the "treasure" boxes. The only reason we did not do the geocahing is the expense of the GPS.

I do GeoCaching. I love it. Last count I think I've found 60 caches.

My wife and I thought about doing it. I know some people that do it and are really into it. GPS devices are coming down in price too....

My girlfriend and I have dabbled in it.
I was surpised to see how many are in the mount vernon/burlington/sedro woolley area. There must be a few dozen within bicycle distance of my home....and a few dozen more in areas I typically hunt, fish, and hike.

It is a great excuse to get outdoors when you don't have anything else in mind...the "suprises" you find are rarely worth taking, but leaving a note and reading the logs is pretty fun. Some of those caches have been running for years, and had HUNDREDS of people visit them.

Cool thing.... thanks for your response. It really is a great way to get outdoors, when sometimes the lake isn't right or you haven't got any worms on hand,,,, or whatever!
