Powell Fly Rods

Anybody ever heard of these or have any experience with them? I've read some reviews that make them out to be quality rods, but would appreciate some info from you folks. Thanks.

I have several Powell's in the arsonal....... they have performed flawlessly for years. I have a two pce 6wt and a 4pce 6wt.

I also have a couple of Powells. A 4pc 4wt and a 3pc 5wt. Both are great rods and I would recommend them to anyone. Also their customer service great. I have broken both and each time I shipped them back with the small fee and received a brand new rod in less than a week.

It seems I've heard that the Powell family is no longer affiliated with the Powell Rod Co. I think they were acquired by a group of investors that knew very little about fly fishing. That being said, the finest fly rod I've ever owned was a 4 piece 6 weight Powell LGA. I truly miss that fly rod. I christened it with a native Westslope Cutthroat on the Selway River in northern Idaho. That memory will live with me forever. It was a fast and responsive rod that made casting a tight loop a breeze. If I had the $$$, I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

They were, and I think still are, quality rods, but as suggested above, I think ownership has changed.

I have 5 Powell rods. They make exceptional fast action rods. I would put them up against any out there in quality and performance regardless of price. The fact that they cost significantly less than some the "premium brands" makes them a great value. They are only making one current model: TiBoron XL

The Powell family was pushed out by Charles Schwab (yes that one!) when a group led by Schwab infused capital into the Powell company in the late 1990's. After a long court battle the company emerged as an independent entity and the surviving Powells are still involved in the design some of the tapers for the fly rods. The company seems to be concentrating on spinning rods, specifically for the Bass crowd.

I have a good friend that is a product sponsor for the company. They are trying to re-establish their dealer network as I understand it. I think you can find their spinning rods at the Sportsman's Warehouse.

I have a 4WT TiMax, a couple of TiBoron models and 2 older models. I use them all. The current offerings (last years models and this years) are great, modern rods. The TiBoron XL is a very fast action rod.

Thanks for the update. As I recall, that is the same information I heard years ago. Some memory fades with the years though. I really do like Powell rods.

Thanks, all. And Rooscooter, Sierra Trading Post is exactly where I saw them, leading me to initiate this thread. Am now thinking about picking a couple up, most likely 6-weights, based on customer reviews and all that you folks have mentioned.

I have a 6 WT TiBoron II and I use it as my primary sinking line rod for lakes. I have it equipped with 500 grain, 24' sink tip line. If they have one, I strongly suggest it if you like fast action rods.

Another rod you might consider if you like fast actions is Temple Forks new Axiom Rods. I will be getting a 5WT in the mail in a couple of days. I tried one a few months ago at a outdoors show in Texas and really liked it. For about $250.00 they are great rods as well.
