Walupt Lake

Post by leahcim_dahc » Sun Aug 30, 2009 8:18 pm

The wifey wants to head up to Walupt for some camping this next week. Sooooo...my pontoon and flyrod will be coming with me. I checked out the reports section, but there hasn't been a report since 2006. Has anyone any input as to what has been successful there.

About the only thing that comes to mind right off is maybe some woolly buggers, adam's, maybe even some terrestrials such as ants or something like that. Any input as how this should be fished or not be fished would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Chad,
The January 17th, 06 report looks pretty good to me. It has me interested and I'm over 300 miles away. I'd probably try an orange tinsel body bugger with an orange bead head, trolled deep on a full sink line. It worked well at Marshall Lake earlier this summer. I'd also get there early, as next Saturday starts Labor Day Weekend.
Good Luck,

Thanks for the input, Joe! I decided to nix the camping idea. Too close to the holiday weekend, and couldn't reserve for the dates I wanted. We'll just have to camp some other time...plus not sure the weather would be cooperative enough to take the family.

However, I still want to fish up there anyway. Not sure if I'll be able to do it this weekend or not, but will hopefully get up there before the roads are stuffed up with snow.

BTW, how did your trip go? Hope you had a good time! :bounce:

Had a great time with a crowd of 2. A friend from Ellensburg and I camped the weekend at Tin Can Flat and we caught a respectable number of native cutthroat. He let me use two of his custom bamboo rods. WOW. I'm sold on bamboo, but my wallet isn't. They both cast butter smooth and when you hook a fish, it's like you're feeling every fin movement the fish is making. They are awesome rods. I came home with lots of food, even after the two of us ate like royalty. Two more friends joined us on Saturday for a couple of hours, so there was a total of 4 of us. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. The St. Joe River is probably the prettiest river I've ever fished.

Awesome...sounds like you had a good time! Bamboo rods seem pretty nice, I haven't had the opportunity to try one...someday I will.

Save up for one. The two I fished with sell for $900-$1000 each. Compared to some, that's a low end price. I think Thomas & Thomas wants around $3000 for theirs. Graphite will do nicely for me. Fiberglass too.
