Which rod and reel do you use for casting?

Post by Kfedka » Wed Jan 20, 2010 1:55 pm

Wanted to get an idea of what you guys use for you rod and reel for casting, as well as in what price range it's in.

I have been buying the somewhat "cheaper" rod/reel combo and they tend to break within a year or two, or the drag stop working or something to that degree.

Depends on what species of fish you are going after. As well as the size of fish you expect to find and maybe catch. Also depends on what line weight/breaking strength you plan on using, and that depends on the amount of cover as well as the type of cover, such as milfoil as compared to buck brush or lily pads and type of lily pads. Then you have to concider what type of lure you plan on using around and in that type of cover.

Also my rods cost me no more than $60 until I bought a specialty rod about 8 years ago. I have rods that I'm still using that I bought back in the late '80s. Same with the reels I use. With no special care on any piece of equipment. The line on my rods usualy last 2 years before I put on new line. I've caught bass up to 10 pounds using this equipment and line ect. I can count the number of broken off fish on one hand. Right now I'm counting 3, 2 of them last year, and 1 back about '93 - from not checking the knot. The 2 last year 1 fish got into the pads after wrapping the line around the troling motor, and 1 fish hit the lure 5 feet from the boat and the drag didn't release in time. Both were 5 pound largemouth. I saw them both.

I know that there are to many variables in that question but here is something that might help. Get a descent spinning reel in the 80-100 dollar range. Usually they come with an extra spool. that way you can load one with 10 -12lb fireline for optimum casting and strength and the other with a good mono. Get a 6'6"- 7' medium action rod, spend about the same amount. It is a good all around pole for many different species. You can go as far as buying extra spools so that you can change to what ever the cover, species etc. dictates. If you spend 200 bucks on a pole and take care of it you will get many years out of it. By the time you buy the cheap ones year after year the other one pays for itself. The old saying you get what you pay for. Anyway hope this helps. Oh if you go with fireline make sure you back it with 20 yds of mono first.

Guess I meant pole/reel combo for that amount. I have a combo I bought out of bass pro 8 years ago for 130 bucks that is my go to rig on almost any condition for a spinning combo.

I have a 8'6 lami mc 86 mc and an abu 4600c3 reel about 160 into that one. A 9ft fenwick with an abu 4600 c3 reel its heavy action around 175 for this one. An okuma 8'6 med action with an abu 4600 c3 around 100 bucks. And then my fav rod for steelies and light salmon, a 9ft loomis spinning rod with an abu cardinal 104 reel I have a whole 120 into it. This one is worth over 300. I like abu reels. They are easy to maintain good price and last a long time when cleaned and lubed every so often. I dont fish salt with them just rivers. I have many lake rods as well. But Im not into spending alot of money on them. I dont fish lakes often. Usually I just pick up ultra light spinning combos for 50 bucks or less and keep around till they break. I have a few I picked up that are over 7 years old and I paid around 25-50 bucks for the whole combo. Take a good look at ebay and craigs list most lamis and all loomis rods carry lifetime warrenty. Sometimes you can come across good deals.
More fish please!
